The Allure of Pearls

Other than diamonds, a string of pearls signifies glamour more than any other piece of jewelry.

“There is just one piece of jewelry that is equally becoming to everybody, lovely with almost every ensemble, appropriate for almost any occasion, and indispensable in every woman’s wardrobe…long live the pearl necklace, true or false, from our first date until our last breath!”

-Genevieve Antoine Dariaux

Other than diamonds, a string of pearls signifies glamour more than any other piece of jewelry. From Coco Chanel’s ropes and ropes of pearls for an ensemble, to Elizabeth Taylor’s ample chest covered in the most famous pearl of all, the La Peregrina, pearls represents rare treasures from the sea. Even though most modern scholars are skeptical, there is a tale of Cleopatra entertaining Mark Antony on her barge and dropping a pearl in a glass of wine and drinking it. Of course, this was to show off her excessive wealth to impress and to seduce Antony.

“The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens.”
