Odd Couples: Cigars

Prepare your mouth for an epically indulgent experience with these fun pairings:

“I never smoke to excess – that is, I smoke in moderation, only one cigar at a time.”

-Mark Twain

Cigars are thought to have been around since the 10th century. With so much time having passed, we thought it was about time to put our Wildcatter spin on the classic luxury and pair them with some new flavors. A nice glass of cognac first comes to mind, but we’re ready to think outside the box and challenge our taste buds. Some prepare your mouth for the flavors of a cigar, while others heighten lingering flavors between puffs.

1. Cigars and Chocolate

These two may seem like an unlikely duo at first, one being sweet and the other bitter, but don’t let that shy you away. Dark chocolate is a great place to start due to its natural bitterness (higher cocoa = more bitter). With the rise of artisan chocolate, the flavor experimentation options are vast.

2. Cigars and Nuts

Roasted nuts and cigars compliment each other with parallels of toastiness. Pecans, walnuts, and almonds are top choices.

3. Cigars and Champagne

Champagne won’t overpower your senses and compete with the flavors of the cigar, as some alcohols do. The bubbles act as nice refreshing cleanser for the palate.

4. Cigars and Coffee

The flavor profiles of the two often overlap and complement each other due to their similar earthy qualities.
