This year, switch up your Mother’s Day gift. Instead of buying yet another gift that your Mom doesn’t really need, donate to a charity in her honor. This meaningful gift will send ripples of joy well beyond your home and into other homes that are more in need.
1. A healthy start for three babies, $63
“Many moms in places like Zimbabwe give birth at home, which is a risk to them and their babies. Oftentimes they don’t go to a clinic because they’re embarrassed that they can’t afford baby clothing. When we offer baby kits filled with clothing, baby soap, diapers and other necessities, moms are more likely to come to our medical centers to give birth. These kits mean more moms will have a healthy and safe delivery and the supplies they need to care for their precious newborns. $63 can supply kits for three moms who are welcoming babies into the world.”

2. One year of School for 2 Girls, $116
“When crisis forces families to make difficult decisions about schooling for their children, often it is young girls who are kept at home and denied a chance at a better life. In places like Afghanistan, Congo or Lebanon, including girls in schools is critical: educated girls become smart, strong women committed to leading their communities toward stability. In Afghanistan alone, we helped to educate more than 21,500 girls in 2015 and 2016 combined. $116 can supply the tuition, books and other supplies two girls need to attend school for a year.”

3. Emergency food for children, $68
“Time is of the essence for malnourished children. To survive a food crisis, like the one in Nigeria, these children need something quick and nutritious. We give them therapeutic foods like Plumpy’nut, a vitamin-packed, protein-rich paste that requires neither preparation nor medical supervision. It’s easy to distribute, tastes good to children and — most importantly — puts them on the path to health. $68 can help us supply 50 malnourished children with three emergency food packets.”

4. Women’s dignity kits, survival tools for women, $80
“Refugees arrive in places like Kenya’s massive Dadaab camp with nothing. They’re thrown into close quarters with tens of thousands of others; privacy ceases to exist. Women are especially vulnerable to harm, including sexual assault. We provide them with critical, even lifesaving supplies: clothing and sandals; a bucket, soap and other toiletries; and a flashlight and whistle to call for help. $80 can provide clothing and safety kits for four women who have lost everything in a crisis.”

5. A Healthy Pregnancy, $52
“Every day, approximately 800 women die during pregnancy or childbirth—often from preventable causes. In places like Kenya, we train local women to be midwives, who provide critical care for expectant mothers from pregnancy through childbirth. A trusted midwife provides a mother-to-be with the advice, medical assistance and other support she needs to keep herself, and her baby, healthy.”
