When it comes to world-class entertainment venues in Texas, there’s a new sheriff in town.
In November of 2019, Fort Worth residents witnessed the debut of the brand new Dickies Arena—a joint project owned by the local government, funded by multiple foundations and philanthropic individuals, and managed by the non-profit group Trail Drive Management Corp.
The Dickies Arena is the newest multi-purpose center for the community and—like everything in Texas—this place is big. With nearly 90,000 square feet of meeting space, a 29,000 square foot event floor, and 14,000 seats, the city has some grand plans for this place. Not only is this arena the new home for the Annual Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, some of their 2020 event headlines include names like Camila Cabello, Rod Stewart, Alan Jackson, and Disney on Ice.
The Arena is more than just a concert venue, however. It is also a tribute to the local community and Texas spirit. Thanks to a contribution from the Alice L. Walton Foundation, visitors will find several glass tile mosaic murals commissioned just for this facility, the crown jewel of which is the “Los Caballos” mural.
“Los Caballos” is the work of William Matthews—a leading artist for pieces that capture the spirit of the American West. The piece depicts wild horses running across a desert landscape and the mosaic is flanked on both sides by bronze horse statues sculpted by Texas-based artist (and Cherokee Nation member) Buckeye Blake. On one horse features a cowboy—the other, a Comanche.
A cultural beacon for the community, local Texans should be excited about what is to come from this new venue. From local events to concerts to sports, the Dickies Arena promises to bring fun and life to this great city.
