Jewelmer: The World is Their Oyster

And they aim to make it greener

“The pearl is an indicator of the health of the planet. Upon its lustrous surface, every typhoon, every change in water temperature, every current caused by a dynamite blast, and every nuance in the cleanliness of the water is recorded…”

While the quote waxes poetic, this statement from the CEO of Jewelmer makes the pearl company’s priorities clear. Jewelmer is not just here to create fine jewelry, they aim to make the world a better place, one pearl at a time.

Founded in 1979 by a French pearl farmer and Filipino entrepreneur, Jewelmer specializes in breeding the Gold Lipped Pinctada Maxima oyster, a mollusk that creates a pearl of deep gold color that is unique to the Philippines. Their oyster hatchery in Palawan province is one of the first and finest in the world.

Jewelmer leaves the South Sea better than they found it. Their hatchery avoids depleting the wild oyster beds of the South Sea region, which is considered one of the few pristine environments left on the planet. In these waters, the pearls are grown in an ecosystem that is clean and free of pollution—resulting in both perfect pearls and healthy animal life. After harvest, the oysters are given three months to recover in a safe environment. Talk about a company with a generous time-off plan.

The Save the Palawan Seas Foundation (SPSF) was created by Jewelmer in 2005 to expand the company’s sustainability efforts. According to them, no one understands the importance of the environment and nature better than those who rely on it for their livelihood. That is why the SPSF partners with communities to create sustainable livelihood practices such as organic farming, tree planting, and beekeeping, allowing people to have a career and stable income stream while also generating awareness and making the world a more sustainable place.
