Bolos, the official necktie of the Southwest (no really, it’s been signed into law in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas), are a must-own accessory for an proper Southern gentleman. This unique style of necktie has long been associated with Western wear, but it’s traditions can be traced back to Native traditions in the Southwest. New Mexico is the capital of Bolo Country, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History called them: “New Mexico’s answer to the formality of neckties and bowties, [they] convey to the world that we are fashionable and interesting; professional but relaxed.”
When donning a bolo, keep in mind that your greatest asset is confidence. After that, follow these simple tips to keep your bolo game sharp:
Always add color
A dazzling bolo will get lost in a plain black or white shirt. Get creative and bust out those colored shirts in your closet! Muted colors work best.
Don’t be afraid to pair it with another statement piece
You’ll probably want all of the focus on your awesome bolo, but pairing it with a nice ring or subtle belt buckle will work to create a polished, deliberate look.
Bolos with boots is best
Anyone can wear a bolo tie, but it’s the accompanying footwear that sets the true Southern gentlemen apart from the posers. A nice simple pair of dress boots will do the trick – nothing too fancy that outshines your neckwear though!
