Located in the beautiful City Park, NOMA is the oldest fine arts museum in New Orleans. Driving down the long driveway leading up to the museum’s entrance, you already find yourself in awe. Upon entering, you are greeted by a beautiful grand staircase and high ceilings. The museum opened in 1911 with only 9 works of art, while today almost 40,000 objects make up its remarkable permanent collection. French and American art, photography, glass, and African and Japanese works make up this collection, alongside rotating modern exhibitions.
Also not to be missed is the five-acre Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden next door. Stepping into this garden is like stepping into a world where you can leave all your worries behind. Make your way through meandering footpaths, reflecting lagoons, and footbridges under Spanish moss-laden 200-year-old live oaks. Catch the more than 60 delicately placed sculptures around every corner. Relax on a bench or take a paddle to the water and canoe your way through.
