Golf and the Game of Business

Business is our favorite sport, but Golf is a close second. Sometimes the best deals are closed on the green.

Business and golf have many similarities.

It is understood between golfers that you follow the rules of the game and conduct yourself in a professional manner, whether or not anyone is watching. In theory, this is the way business should be conducted as well. This may explain why golf is the go-to activity for many business professionals. Many golfers believe that there are strong parallels between how someone conducts themselves on the golf course and how they will conduct themselves in a business deal.

Interestingly, many of the same qualities that go into creating a good golfer are the same qualities needed to make a good businessperson: patience, focus, problem solving, and the ability to ignore distractions, just to name a few.

“Golf is a game that is played on a five inch course – the distance between your ears.”

-Bobby Jones

When it comes to sporting activities, golf is the great equalizer. People of all ages and athletic abilities can play the game of golf. With a bit of practice, almost anyone can become a mediocre golfer, or at least good enough to compete with an added golf handicap number.

“I have found the game to be, in all factualness, a universal language wherever I traveled at home or abroad.”

-Ben Hogan

Knowing how to play golf within the rules, and etiquette, is very important when conducting business on the course. Just as you are formulating opinions about your playing partner, remember, you are being judged as well. Make good decisions and hit ‘em straight!

“To find a man’s true character, play golf with him.”

– P. G. Wodehouse
