Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore is one of our favorite Wildcatter travel destinations, and summer is a great time to visit Asheville.

Asheville, North Carolina

George Washington Vanderbilt, a businessman who amassed a huge fortune, wanted to build a country retreat in North Carolina, but instead, the “Biltmore” became the largest private residence in America. The mansion features four acres of floor space, 250-rooms, including 33 family and guest bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, three kitchens, an indoor swimming pool, and a bowling alley. The Biltmore exudes hospitality, beauty, and luxury that has not changed in more than a century. The grounds are stunning from the moment you approach the house. Mr. Vanderbilt employed Frederick Law Olmsted to design the grounds; the same Mr. Olmstead who designed Central Park in New York.

The Biltmore is one of our favorite Wildcatter travel destinations, and summer is a great time to visit Asheville! Here are some tips to get the most out of your trip:

  • Make sure to take the Biltmore House Private Tour to step into places in the house where regular audio tour guests are not allowed.
  • Take the Private Carriage Estate Tour to fully appreciate the beautiful grounds. The carriage drivers are knowledgeable about the grounds, and they will make stops at the most picturesque places and allow you to get off and take pictures.
  • Make sure to visit the Tasting Room at the Biltmore Winery.
  • Stay at the Inn on Biltmore Estates where Afternoon Tea and a spa visit are a must.
  • Don’t miss the Diana Statue (goddess of the hunt), located at the highest point, where you get a different view of the house. If you’re lucky, you might catch a concert at the summit.
  • Plan another visit during mid to late October for a spectacular view of the fall seasonal colors. And of course, the best view is from a hot air balloon!
