Blind Tiger Guest House: A Nod to the Roaring 20s

In a landscape of Cape-style homes, lighthouses, and colonial architecture, it’s no surprise the Blind Tiger Guest House is in a category all its own. Its name is a nod to the Prohibition Era, where a “blind tiger” was code for a place to score a drink. And given that Maine was the first state to ban alcohol, coupled with the unmistakable identity of a tiger, the Blind Tiger Guest House stands out in Portland’s luxury travel scene.

A Little Blind Tiger History

The building itself dates back nearly 200 years, first serving as a home, then later becoming a private school, a church office, and an inn. The home’s basement became a hotspot during Prohibition where socialites would gather in secret. Though the original home has undergone expansions, many of its original features (like the iconic rooftop cupola) have been well preserved and continue to be a focus of conservation.

Make Yourself at Home

Though the Blind Tiger Guest House maintains much of its historic features and beauty, guests can expect all the modern conveniences and comforts they need while traveling. The home has been outfitted with a full kitchen and bar area for socializing and unwinding. Guests can help themselves to a light breakfast each morning and snacks throughout the day. Explore the lower-level speakeasy-turned-billiard room or venture to the top cupola for panoramic views of downtown Portland.

Rich, warm hues and materials decorate each guest room, many of which also comes with a working fireplace. Traditional four-poster beds and wooden floors blend beautifully with plush linens and rich rugs. Every room is unique, from the colors and decor to the views of the city. That’s because each room has been “adopted” by a local who has added their own fashions and flair to the room to showcase the many creative styles of Portland.

Single rooms and suites are available for nightly or weekly rentals. Explore this little slice of Portland history and get a feel for everything that defines this cool city.
