Hargitay began acting in high school and was crowned Miss Beverly Hills USA in the early 80s. She left college early to join the Groundlings improv group in Los Angeles. Soon after, she began appearing in smaller roles on television.
She is most famous for playing the role of Olivia Benson in all 20 seasons of the television drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
She became a producer for the show during its 15th season and has even directed a handful of episodes.
